Starting with the 2015 tax year filing, fully insured employers with over 50 employees are required to file form 1094C with the IRS and distribute form 1095C to all full time employees to whom health coverage was offered during 2015. Smaller, self-insured employers are required to file form 1094B with the IRS and distribute form 1095B to all full time employees to whom health coverage was offered during 2015.
In addition, health insurance carriers will provide form 1095B to all individuals insured in their health plans during the year regardless of employer size.
The deadline for furnishing the forms to employees has been extended from 2/1/16 to 3/31/16. The deadline for furnishing the forms to the IRS has been extended from 3/31/16 to 6/30/16 if filing electronically.
Due to these extensions, individuals may file their taxes without these forms for 2015 but should keep the forms with their tax records once received.
